STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Lifelong Staten Islander William E. Schick, 65, of Great Kills, a retired special education teacher and dedicated assistant football coach, died Monday at home of a heart attack.

Born in Westerleigh, he moved to Great Kills more than 15 years ago.

Mr. Schick graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1965, and then earned a bachelor's degree in education from Kansas Wesleyan University. In 1981, Mr. Schick graduated from the College of Staten Island with a master's degree in special education.

He taught in the special education department at Susan E. Wagner High School for many years, and also doubled as a football coach for 31 years. Mr. Schick served as defensive assistant coach and a football scout, and had a hand in six Susan Wagner PSAL city championships.

"He was extremely well-loved. He was a great force in the special education department," said football coach Al Paturzo, who had Mr. Schick on his staff for 24 years. "He was great. We worked all those years together through the championships."

Paturzo said despite Schick's retirement in 2008, he was still involved with the program.

In addition to his football duties at Wagner, Mr. Schick also assisted former school baseball coach Jack O'Hanlon for 13 years and guided the Falcons' varsity basketball team for 10 seasons.

Mr. Schick was a member of the Beacon Light Chapter, Order of the Master Masons.

He enjoyed listening to music and playing multiple instruments, including the drums, guitar, banjo, trumpet, mandolin and kazoo.

Mr. Schick loved to golf and visit casinos in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

His sister, Karen Korbul, called him a great guy.

Mr. Schick's wife of eight years, the former Jo-Anne Teryek, died in 2005.

In addition to his sister, Karen, surviving are his mother, Marie Schick; a brother, Robert, and another sister, Marie McGrath.

The funeral will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook. Burial will follow in Woodbridge (N.J.) Memorial Gardens.
