CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- State officials are warning Nevadans about insurance telemarketers pretending to be DMV employees.
Officials said the callers sometimes say DMV records show the motorist is overpaying on insurance. Other times, they identify themselves as DMV employees and ask for information about the motorist's vehicles before offering discounted insurance.
State officials said the calls aren't authorized by the department in any way.
DMV Director Troy Dillard said his agency never calls to ask for personal information, and adds that insurance records are strictly confidential.
The pitch has been circulating in northern Nevada. Officials said callers will often leave a callback number with a 775 area code.
