PlayStation Streaming? On a Summer's Day? | Gamer Blahhhg

It?s amazing how a single, off hand comment in an E3 preview article can give birth to such a great deal of anticipation and speculation. I have to believe VG24/7 knew exactly what they were doing when they inserted a throwaway comment about Sony announcing a partnership with a major player in cloud gaming at this year?s Electronic Entertainment Expo like a bomb into a boilerplate preview. It wasn?t until the rumor was already burning up NeoGAF and other gaming forums that the kernel was published as a stand alone rumor.

Despite having so little to go on, gamers across the internet went into overdrive hoping to make sense of the cryptic statement. Most focused on the two established streaming gaming service companies, Gaikai and OnLive.

Both use similar technology to stream live video of a PC game being run on server across the internet to a player controlling the game with their PC, Mac, tablet, smart TV or microconsole. In either case the internet acts like an extremely long extension cord carrying the control input signals from the player to the server and returning the video output as an h.264 stream to the player?s display.

The benefits include the ability to play instantly without downloading or installing large amounts of game files, and very low hardware requirements for whatever system the player has. If a computer is fast enough to stream Hulu or Netflix, it?s fast enough to play The Witcher 2 or Metro: 2033. Both have the same drawbacks involving added latency that decreases a game?s responsiveness, and a degradation of visual quality due to the video compression.

Right now Gaikai primarily works with retailers and publishers to use their technology for game demos that can be embedded in websites. It?s not hard to see how that would be in OnLive?s interest, massively expanding their potential market, but it would be strange for Sony to allow essentially a competing game delivery mechanism on their hardware that undermines their entire royalty structure for games.

While the existing business models make little sense, that?s not to say there isn?t a place for either Gaikai or OnLive?s technology under the PlayStation umbrella. One nagging issue on the PS3, for example, has been the incomplete nature of PS2 backwards compatibility since the hardware solution was eliminated to bring down the cost of the system. The PS3 manages to emulate a small number of PS2 games sold exclusively through the PlayStation Store, it?s a far cry from the library of thousands that system enjoyed.

While the PS3?s hardware limitations stand in the way of comprehensive software emulation, modern gaming PCs, like those used as gaming servers by Gaikai and OnLive are actually far more capable of emulating PS2 software. Perhaps Sony has decided that if a game can?t be emulated by the PS3 and isn?t popular enough to warrant an HD upgrade, maybe streaming from the cloud is a viable option. As an added benefit, there?s no reason to limit streamed PS2 games to the PS3. They could work just as well on the Vita, or even on Sony Tablets and Phones, Smart TVs or PCs.

Streaming also provides another potential solution involving backwards compatibility. Rumors have been swirling this year about both Sony and Microsoft?s next generation hardware. The general consensus seems to point towards Sony abandoning the Cell CPU architecture used by the PS3 in favor of a more developer friendly, and perhaps cost effective x86 processor designed by AMD. While the switch may be incredibly beneficial in many aspects, it does pose a problem for anyone hoping to play their PS3 games on a PS4. The Cell?s exotic design is extremely fast in certain situations, far too fast to be emulated at full speed in software by an AMD CPU. This is disconcerting for anyone hopeful their library of PSN titles might carry over to the next generation of hardware.

With cloud gaming that may actually be possible. Instead of streaming games from a PC to a PS3 as described above, similar technology could be used to stream games being run on PS3 servers to PS4s, Vitas and potentially other devices. Naturally, your PSN account would have a record of all the downloadable games you own unlocking access to those, and even disc based games could work. Pop your Uncharted 3 blu-ray into a PS4, the console confirms the presence of the retail disc to the service and your game starts streaming.

Possibilities don?t end there. For example, cloud streaming could potentially let PS3 owners who haven?t yet upgraded to a PS4 try demos of games for the new system. Even more radical, Sony could forgo new consumer hardware altogether. Perhaps the next PlayStation won?t be a console at all, but a server platform for the PlayStation cloud.

One of the things that has thus far held back both OnLive and Gaikai from achieving their true potential is a reliance on PC versions of all their games. Titles that have been developed to target a broad spectrum of hardware capabilities don?t really use the game servers to the full extent they could. But if Sony were to acquire one of these streaming platforms straight up that could change. Sony could establish whatever hardware baseline they choose and create exclusive software built for that platform.

Without the kind of limitations on price and form factor that is dictated by the current home console business model, that hardware could be far more powerful than any traditional PS4 we might predict today. The hardware platform could even be malleable enough to be customized for specific games. We?re talking huge amounts of RAM, SSDs, no load times, the fastest GPUs available and heavy duty multi-core processors. It would be like a return to the exiotic world of specialized arcade hardware, only instead of paying for that expensive cabinet one quarter at a time, the cost can be amortized across a large number of paying subscribers and game buyers.

Of course, that?s all a bit pie in the sky right now. It?s easy to see why publishers and platform holders are eyeing cloud gaming with great interest. Cloud games cut out retail. They eliminate used sales. They literally cannot be pirated. But their biggest drawback is the current state of broadband infrastructure around the world. It is just too soon to take that leap when so many of your existing users live in parts of the world where fast, reliable, affordable broadband internet service is hard to come by.

But it?s never too soon to start laying the groundwork and conditioning the user-base to understand and appreciate the advantages of the cloud. Starting with something like a retro game service, perhaps as a benefit for PlayStation Plus members seems like a good place to start. The PS3 may not be the last generation of console hardware, but don?t be surprised if the PS4 is?

The first Journal from the Academy of Philanthropy will use the recently held Global Donors Forum 2012 as a platform for a focus on Impact Philanthropy and investing with a particular focus on impact and accountability in Muslim Philanthropy. The First Journal of the Academy of Philanthropy focuses on Impact Philanthropy and Investing . We are in an era of increased accountability and as a consequence of the work of WCMP, there is an increasing desire to improve the impact of Muslim philanthropy. Governments, Foundations, Corporations, individuals and the public are debating the impact of philanthropy, achievement and accountability and each have their own local and international agendas and perspectives.

Leaders in Philanthropy do not have the luxury to wait for clear guidance for improving the impact of their philanthropy. Instead, successful leaders are striving to create learning philanthropic communities who self-regulate, self-improve by measuring both their impact and accountability.

We are seeking manuscripts that explore successful leadership in philanthropy to improve impact, accountability, and innovation and connect thoughts and ideas with reality.

Our goal is to create an edited publication journal/book that examines successful philanthropy and leadership of philanthropy and investing.

1. What does the current landscape of Philanthropy in the Muslim world look like? How does this compare with the rest of the world?
2. Is the ?Giving Landscape? shifting around the world from conventional charity to impact philanthropy? How does this compare with the ?Giving landscape in the Muslim World?
3. How do leaders of philanthropy successfully manage the politics and local cultural contexts of accountability and impact measurement?
4. To what degree are innovation and creativity in Philanthropy and investment affected as accountability and the desire for greater impact increases?
5. Why does some philanthropy and investment thrive during times of increasing accountability and impact measures? What are the challenges for Muslim Philanthropy?
6. How do organizations achieve balance between grant making and social investment?
7. How have leaders in philanthropy and social investment used new practice increased the social impact of their philanthropy? How do they shape leadership capacity, and continuous self-improvement at local and international level? Is this happening in the Muslim World?

Submission Guidelines

Manuscripts must be submitted by August 1, 2012 to be considered for publication. The suggested length of manuscripts is 3,500 words and must not exceed 7000 words, excluding references. Please e-mail manuscripts to Dr. Yunus Sola [ysola@thewcmp.org].

Asia stocks down as worries over Greece grow

BANGKOK (AP) ? A report that Greece is considering preparations to leave the euro common currency sent Asian stock markets lower Wednesday.

Investors have long acknowledged the possibility of a Greek withdrawal from the 17-nation euro currency union as the country struggles to meet harsh austerity targets that are a condition of getting international bailout money.

But a financial news service's report, which quoted former Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos suggesting such a euro exit could be approaching, flustered markets.

"I think investors now are concerned that Greece may finally leave the euro currency union," said Dickie Wong of Kingston Securities Ltd. in Hong Kong.

Another big worry for investors is a slowdown in Chinese growth, compounded by a reluctance of Chinese companies to borrow because of uncertainty about the economy.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 1.8 percent to 8,575.55. The Bank of Japan on Wednesday left its key interest rate unchanged at near zero as widely expected.

Later Wednesday, leaders of the 27 European Union countries will meet in Brussels for a summit expected to focus on ways to kick start the region's faltering economy. A failure to make headway risks jolting markets further, analysts said.

"Unless there are dramatic developments at today's summit, risk assets are set to continue to remain under pressure," analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in an email.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.7 percent to 18,721.37 and South Korea's Kospi lost 1.3 percent at 1,804.50. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 1.1. percent to 4,074.70.

Falling oil and metal prices hurt commodity shares. Hong Kong-listed PetroChina, China's largest oil and gas producer, fell 2.5 percent. Aluminum Corp. of China lost 3 percent.

Asian companies deriving significant sales revenue from exports slumped a day after the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development warned that euro countries are at risk of falling into a "severe recession."

Hong Kong-listed China Shipping Container Lines Co. fell 4 percent. Japan's Yamaha Motor Corp. tumbled 4.2 percent and Panasonic Corp. lost 2.8 percent. South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co. lost 1.7 percent.

U.S. stocks traded higher Tuesday until near the close, when Dow Jones Newswires reported that Papademos said preparations for Greece to drop the euro are being considered.

A 50-point gain in the Dow Jones industrial average turned into a 57-point loss in 45 minutes. The Dow ended the day down marginally to 12,502.81. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose less than 1 point to 1,316.63. The Nasdaq composite index fell 0.3 percent to 2,839.08.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 55 cents to $91.29 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.01 to settle at $91.85 in New York on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2673 from $1.2756 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar fell to 79.61 yen from 79.92 yen.

Romney opens new front against Obama, saying schools are failing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney opened a new front on Wednesday in his fight against President Barack Obama, accusing him of presiding over a failing U.S. education system that is in the grip of union bosses who refuse to accept reforms.

In a rare diversion from his campaign focus on the weak U.S. economy, Romney laid out an education plan in a speech that represented his most overt appeal to date to Hispanic voters who have largely sided with the Democratic incumbent.

Although he trails Obama by a huge margin among Hispanics, Romney's address to a Hispanic business group avoided mentioning a top priority for them: how to overhaul the country's immigration system.

Romney said millions of American children are getting a "third-world education," and offered proposals that he said would reward teachers for their results instead of their seniority. And he would give parents greater choice of where to send their children to school and take other steps to reduce the influence of powerful teachers' unions.

"I believe the president must be troubled by the lack of progress since he took office. Most likely, he would have liked to do more. But the teachers unions are one of the Democrats' biggest donors - and one of the president's biggest campaign supporters. So, President Obama has been unable to stand up to union bosses - and unwilling to stand up for kids," Romney said.

Romney's focus on education comes during a spirited battle in Washington over student loan programs. Obama's Democrats have been pushing for an extension of low-interest loan rates for federal student loans to avoid a doubling of the rates from 3.4 percent. After an extended partisan fight, a compromise with Republicans is expected by the July 1 deadline.

The former Massachusetts governor is running neck-and-neck with Obama in polls, a prelude to what could be a close election.

His education drive gave respite from fighting with Obama over how best to hasten growth of the U.S. economy, and increasingly heated rhetoric between the two over Romney's time as the head of a corporate buyout company Bain Capital.

HISPANICS AND EDUCATION

Hispanics will likely be crucial to the election.

A Wall Street Journal/NBC/Telemundo poll out this week showed Obama leading Romney with Hispanic voters 61 percent to 27 percent. Romney is only now starting a push to try to peel some of them away because of their potential influence in swing states like New Mexico, Florida, Colorado, Virginia and North Carolina.

But Romney went almost an hour at his event, including a speech and taking questions from the event moderator, without mentioning the U.S. immigration system and how he would deal with 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

During the Republican primary battle, Romney and his rivals upset many Hispanics by adopting hard-right immigration positions. Romney called for the "self-deportation" of illegal immigrants.

On Wednesday, he kept his speech to education, also a top issue for Hispanic voters although one that rarely ignites much passion on the campaign.

Hispanic Republican strategists said Romney was wise to keep his focus on education and the economy, noting that in several polls, Hispanic voters rate the economy well ahead of immigration as the issue they care about most.

"Clearly, it appears that Governor Romney has chosen to focus on what the vast majority of U.S. Hispanics and Latinos feel is of highest priority," said Daniel Garza, a Republican strategist and executive director of The Libre Initiative.

Standing before a banner that read "A Chance for Every Child," Romney laid out an education plan that relies heavily on bolstering and improving the No Child Left Behind education law engineered by Obama's Republican predecessor, George W. Bush.

Romney made more money and more access to charter schools the centerpiece of his platform, but he launched a strong attack on teachers' unions.

"The teachers' unions are the clearest example of a group that has lost its way," Romney said.

The education speech was a welcome break for Romney, who has been under a barrage of accusations from Democrats that he killed blue-collar jobs when he was head of Bain in the 1990s.

Bain bought and restructured companies, sometimes resulting in a loss of jobs. But Romney says the company more than made up for that by helping to establish companies that became big employers, like office supplies store Staples.

He told Time magazine that business experience gave him the savvy to fix the U.S. economy, and he welcomed scrutiny of his record.

"The fact is that I spent 25 years in the private sector. And that obviously teaches you something that you don't learn if you haven't spent any time in the private sector," Romney told Time.

While Romney is often ahead of Obama in opinion polls on the economy, the president's foreign policy credentials weigh in Obama's favor compared to the former Massachusetts governor who has little foreign experience.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell criticized Romney for taking advice from foreign policy advisers who are "quite far to the right," in an sign of lingering strains from his tenure under President George W. Bush.

He made clear that he is not happy with some of the neo-conservatives who are advising Romney and took exception to a recent comment from Romney that Russia is the top U.S. geopolitical threat.

"Come on Mitt, think! That isn't the case," said Powell.

Do bald men face higher risk of prostate cancer?

Study finding is preliminary, and men with full heads of hair may still have equal risk.

(HealthDay) -- Got hair? If you don't, you might have a higher risk of prostate cancer, a preliminary study suggests.

Researchers are reporting that bald men who underwent biopsies of the prostate were more likely to have cancer than were those with more hair on their heads.

"Bald men should be aware that they may benefit from being screened earlier and perhaps, if necessary, from being biopsied sooner," said study author Dr. Neil Fleshner, a professor of surgical urology at the University of Toronto. "In the study, the more bald people were, the more likely they were to have prostate cancer. We're 95 percent sure this is real."

However, not all doctors are ready to embrace the study's conclusions.

The possible association between male pattern baldness and prostate cancer has been considered in previous studies.

Although the precise mechanism isn't understood, researchers think male hormones known as androgens may play a role in both baldness and prostate cancer. Androgens, which include testosterone, can inhibit hair growth and trigger the development of prostate cells.

It's thought that the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) increases in bald men, causing the hair follicles to shrink gradually. As the follicles get smaller, the hair weakens and eventually stops growing. DHT also has been implicated in the development of prostate cancer.

The U.S. National Cancer Institute estimates there will be more than 240,000 new cases of prostate cancer this year. The prevalence of baldness increases with age, and it affects about 40 million men in the United States.

The research was scheduled for presentation at a news conference Tuesday at the American Urological Association annual meeting in Atlanta.

The study involved 214 patients aged 59 to 70 years old with elevated prostate-specific antigen test numbers (averaging 5.8). The men had all been referred for a prostate biopsy. Baldness was assessed on a four-point scale -- just in the front, just a little on the top, moderate top and sides and severe top and sides -- before the biopsy was taken.

The more severe a man's balding pattern, the more strongly it was associated with a positive biopsy.

Men with a normal PSA were not included in the study, which found an association between baldness and prostate cancer risk, but did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

The researchers also sought to determine whether there is a relationship between the relative length of a man's index and ring fingers and the diagnosis of prostate cancer, a question raised by previous studies. Some researchers have thought that the level of sex hormones in the womb could prenatally affect both finger length and predisposition to prostate cancer. No association was found in this study, however.

Dr. Nelson Stone, a clinical professor of urology and radiation oncology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, questioned the potential value of the baldness study.

Stone said the researchers should have tested for hormone levels to see what association, if any, the amount of testosterone and DHT had on the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

"The incidence of baldness goes up with age, and we know that testosterone levels fall with age, and we still don't know why," he said.

Complicating the issue is also the question of whether the men with a positive biopsy had predominantly aggressive or nonaggressive forms of prostate cancer, Stone said.

Dr. Tobias Kohler, public liaison to the American Urological Association, said that, with or without hair on their heads, men can't relax about prostate cancer.

"There is a link between baldness and prostate cancer, but it could be due to some other factor -- perhaps something in the environment or something genetic, " he said. "I would approach this study with caution."

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Private rocket blasts off for space station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? A commercial rocket blasted off early Tuesday with a load of supplies for the International Space Station, opening a new era of dollar-driven spaceflight.

The SpaceX company made history as its Falcon 9 rocket rose from its seaside launch pad and pierced the pre-dawn sky, aiming for a rendezvous later this week with the space station. The rocket carried into orbit a capsule named Dragon that is packed with 1,000 pounds of space station provisions.

It is the first time a private company has launched a vessel to the space station. That's something only major governments have done ? until the present test flight. Launch controllers applauded when the Dragon reached orbit 9 minutes into the flight.

This time, the Falcon's nine engines kept firing all the way through liftoff. On Saturday, flight computers aborted the launch with a half-second remaining in the countdown; a bad engine valve was replaced.

The real test comes Thursday when the Dragon reaches the vicinity of the space station. It will undergo practice maneuvers from more than a mile out. If all goes well, the docking will occur Friday.

The space station was zooming over the North Atlantic, just east of Newfoundland, when the Falcon took flight.

NASA is looking to the private sector to take over orbital trips in this post-shuttle period; several U.S. companies are vying for the opportunity. The goal is to get American astronauts launching again from U.S. soil. SpaceX officials say that could happen in as little as three years, possibly four.

Until their retirement last summer, NASA's shuttles provided the bulk of space station equipment and even the occasional crew member. American astronauts are stuck riding Russian rockets to orbit until SpaceX or one of its competitors takes over the job. Russia also is making periodic cargo hauls, along with Europe and Japan.

SpaceX ? or Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? is based in Southern California. That's where the company's Mission Control is located for this flight and where billionaire founder Elon Musk positioned himself for Tuesday's launch.

Musk, a co-creator of PayPal, founded SpaceX a decade ago. He's poured millions of his own money into the company, and NASA has contributed $381 million as seed money. In all, the company has spent more than $1 billion on the effort.

Hundreds of SpaceX and NASA guests poured into the launching area in the wee hours of Tuesday, eager to see firsthand the start of this new commercial era. The company had a single second to get its rocket flying, and that's all it needed.

Everyone, it seemed, was rooting for a successful flight. "Good luck SpaceX Dragon," read a hotel sign in nearby Cocoa Beach.

The six space station astronauts were especially enthusiastic; the crew beamed down a picture on the eve of the launch, showing the two who will use a robot arm to snare the Dragon.

In December 2010, SpaceX became the first private company to launch a spacecraft into orbit and retrieve it. That test flight of a Dragon capsule paved the way for this mission, which also is meant to culminate with a splashdown of the capsule in the Pacific.

This newest capsule is supposed to remain at the space station for a week before bringing back experiments and equipment. None of the other types of current cargo ships can return safely; they burn up on the way down.

SpaceX and NASA officials stress this is a demonstration flight and that even if something goes wrong, much can be learned.

"Whatever happens today, we could not have done it without (at)NASA, but errors are ours alone and me most of all," Musk said via Twitter right before Saturday's launch abort. The company will try again no matter what; two more Dragon supply missions, in fact, are planned this year.

Musk, 40, is the chief executive officer and chief designer for SpaceX. He also runs Tesla Motors, his electric car company.

NASA retired its space shuttle fleet last summer. The three remaining shuttles ? Discovery, Endeavour and Atlantis ? are now relegated to museums.
