The FZI House of Living Labs will present the interactive HoLLiE service robot and solutions for intelligent energy management.

ARMAR Robot Learns by Watching

A robot helping in the household no longer is a dream of the future. ARMAR, the humanoid robot, can understand commands and execute them independently. For instance, it gets the milk out of the fridge. Thanks to cameras and sensors, it orients itself in the room, recognizes objects, and grasps them with the necessary sensitivity. Additionally, it reacts to gestures and learns by watching a human colleague how to empty a dishwasher or clean the counter. Thus, it adapts naturally to man's environment. LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Rachel Crow was a tearful runner-up on "The X Factor," but she's a winner now.

The 14-year-old singer has signed a series deal with the Nickelodeon channel and a recording contract with Sony's Columbia Records-Syco.

Nickelodeon said Wednesday its agreement with Crow includes development of a comedy series for the teenager. She'll also have a recurring role in Nickelodeon's new program, "Fred: The Show."

Crow's recording deal puts her in business with "X Factor" creator Simon Cowell's Syco enterprise.

The big-voiced teenager made a dramatic exit from "X Factor" last December: Crow collapsed onstage after she was voted off by viewers.

Perhaps MTV News can show the hero in a different light. On February 17, we were invited to join a small group of passionate supporters to spread the mark of Spider-Man all across New York City. Our mission: to travel to predetermined locations throughout Manhattan to tag specific walls with the Amazing Spider-Man's famous insignia. "That's kind of odd," you might be saying to yourself. But there was nothing odd about it to Abigail Flynn, one of the carefully selected Spidey supporters out in full force on behalf of the amazing web-slinger.

"We're supporting Spider-Man," Flynn told MTV News of the campaign. "We're putting up the mark of the Spider-Man around the city to spread awareness and spread his message."

Fellow web-head Walter Sojda added, "He's fighting for the little guy. We have to show that in New York, we care about Spider-Man. We're supporting him here."

New York isn't the only place Spider-Man has recently found support. All last week, the superhero's message was spread throughout five other American cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle and Atlanta. Clearly, the hero's national awareness is on the rise — good timing, no doubt, considering he has a movie on the way!

Spreading the mark of Spider-Man isn't the only thing that has our spider senses tingling here at MTV News. Early last week, MTV Splash Page received a mysterious backpack in the mail, with no explanation as to its origin other than a haphazardly attached piece of duct tape reading "Property of Peter Parker." Spidey's supporters were tight-lipped when asked about Parker's identity, so the connection between the two remains unclear for now.

Here's something that is clear: Despite what the Bugle says, there's a whole lot of love out there for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man — and Manhattan has the mark to prove it.

Men, Older Women and Children are Increasingly Developing the Deadliest Mental Illness

Denver, CO, February 21, 2012 ? Four in 10 Americans have either suffered from or know someone who has suffered from an eating disorder, according to the National Eating Disorders Association. During National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (February 26-March 3), Eating Recovery Center (www.EatingRecoveryCenter.com), an international center for eating disorders recovery, highlights eating disorders? pervasive impact on Americans of all ages and genders.

?A classic misconception of eating disorders is that they are a teenage girls? disease, when in fact, we are seeing more older women, younger children and men of all ages entering treatment,? said Kenneth L. Weiner, MD, FAED, CEDS, founding partner, chief executive officer and chief medical officer of Eating Recovery Center. ?Genetic risk factors and environmental triggers for these diseases don?t discriminate based on age or gender.?

The 2012 National Eating Disorders Awareness Week theme is ?Everybody Knows Somebody,? which is truer now more than ever, as eating disorders and body image dissatisfaction continue to experience what experts term ?epidemiological drift,? which is marked by a condition?s swift growth in incidence in new populations.

Older women: Eating Recovery Center has seen a marked increase in older women seeking treatment for eating disorders. From 2010 to 2011, admissions of women over the age of 30 increased from 27 percent of total admissions to 33 percent of total admissions. In the same timeframe, admissions of women over the age of 40 increased from 13 percent of total admissions to 15 percent of total admissions.

Men: A recent British study shows that more than 80 percent of men regularly engage in conversation about their bodies, that three in five men are unhappy with their muscularity and that more than one-third of men would trade a year of their life to achieve their ideal body weight or shape.

Younger children: From 1999 to 2006, hospitalizations for eating disorders increased sharply ? 119 percent ? for children younger than 12 years of age, according to recent analysis by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

?It?s important to be aware that eating disorders can happen to anyone?men, older women and younger children,? continued Dr. Weiner. ?Do not discount disordered eating behaviors or concerning body image issues just because they are displayed by an individual believed to be outside of the traditional ?eating disorder demographic.??

Eating Recovery Center encourages individuals to quickly respond if they notice troubling food- or body image-oriented behaviors in their loved ones, regardless of age or gender. Eating disorders recovery is entirely possible with early intervention and proper treatment from qualified professionals.

If you notice troubling behaviors in an adult friend or loved one, find a quiet time and place for a private, respectful meeting to discuss your concerns; and ask if he or she has considered whether or not he or she may have an eating disorder. While you continue to express your support, offer to help your friend or loved seek treatment.

If you notice troubling behaviors in your child or adolescent, engage your child in conversation and speak to what you have noticed instead of making accusations; visit a medical provider if you are concerned about your child?s physical health; and identify a mental health provider for an eating disorders assessment.

This is the auto-generated OOC topic for the roleplay "Harry Potter Next Generation"

Introduction:

Hogwarts: School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is ready to begin another new year with a bout of fresh faces to fill its halls. Harry Potter and his gang have grown up and now have children of their own eagerly awaiting their letters. However, there are Muggle Born's who have no idea of the future in store for them. Voldemort has fallen but he still has a few loyal followers who are terrorizing the non-magical community. Will you fight for freedom and equality for all? Or will you join the rag tag group of death eaters bent on mayhem and destruction. Only time will tell.

I know that was an extremely short introduction but we all know about Hogwarts and what it is, what it stands for. Our story starts out on Platform 9 3/4 with the first years boarding the train and saying goodbye to their families. As GM I will be moving the role-play along. We will spend a short amount of time on the train, a short amount of time on the sorting ceremony, and etc. Right now I am thinking a week for each which means we need active role-players who will check in at least every other day and respond.

Rules:

No God-Modding or Power-Playing (Every single character must have a weakness)
All characters must be approved before you begin role-playing, and must have a complete character profile.
As creator of the role-play, I reserve the right to request you to leave if you are disobeying the rules
Be polite to each other (Don't start drama in the ooc: what happens ic: stays ic:)
Be as literate as possible (No one liners or chat speak, you will be asked to leave. Even if you have writers block try to make a small paragraph at least)
No romance, it leads to two people going off on their own and having a private role-play within the role-play. I would prefer we were all interacting with each other. Also, these are first years, there was never any romance in JK Rowling's first year students.

Your character must be a first year unless you are playing a teacher. We are starting from the beginning here at platform 9 3/4 at the Hogwarts express. You may reference older students when you are role-playing but you cannot make them a character. Treat all upper class students as NPC's. Stay true to your character's house. If you are in Slytherin you have a mean streak but can have the occasional nice moments. If you are in Gryfindor you are nice, but may have the occasional mean streak. etc. Also, most families wont have more than two children unless you are the a Weasly. And the likelihood of both children being a first year is non-existant. So One Weasly per Weasly family and if you want twins you have to show exception skill as to why you should be allowed to play them. No more than five boys and five girls per house.

There will be no quidditch until the second year begins. Harry was the one exception to the school rules, there will be none in this roleplay. We start out on the train, the GM will alert you when we reach the school, and after the sorting ceremony is over. There will probably be a week for each section of the roleplay depending on activity of the players.

Please use the basic character generator and under the section for supplies add your age, house, parentage and wand. Please use real life actors for your picture and post in the OOC: who your face claim is. If you want to play the sibling of a character already claimed you must ask first the person who has claimed those parents. It is up to them whether or not they allow a sibling.

I can't do lists when creating a character, so I say for those who want to do it like this, go ahead just make sure you put the character name, a small description, and a photo. If you want to stray from this skelly that is alright but please be literate and detailed when adding information and try to get as much of the list's information in as possible and the History is not optional. You must include a characters history.

Entrepreneurial Ways to New Small Business Loans | Income Finance

Access to capital for small businesses still remains as dry as James Bond?s vodka martinis.

Banks continue to keep their vault doors shut tight.? And, given that the portfolio of commercial loans in this country is teetering on a knife?s edges, who can blame these financial institutions for showing caution as these commercial loans can, at any moment, turn toxic (following the lead of all those subprime mortgage loans that trusted us into this financial crisis some two years ago).

But, like the knife?s edge that these loan portfolios are balancing on, the economic recovery that is scarcely showing signs of life is also hanging on by a thread.

Any recovery in this country will only be lead by small businesses.? It is small businesses that have the greatest impact on community development, hiring, growth and wealth creation.? And, when communities at large get lifted up by the very same members who reside there, all those within those communities benefit ? all groups, not just a select few.

However, when it comes to lending, given our current underwriting models, it is also these same small businesses that encompass the greatest amount of risk to banks, or so they say.? But, maybe this greater risk is tied more closely to the method of underwriting than it is to the borrowers themselves.

Banks and other financial lenders have essentially used the same underwriting guidelines or criteria for centuries.? At the beginning of the loan process, lenders tend to analysis a borrower?s past performance to gauge how each borrower will perform in the future; sometimes with very little understanding of where that borrower may ascend to at some future point in time.? Further, while most regional or national banks have taken strides in implementing new technologies seeming deigned to improve underwriting (usually by taking credit decisions out of the hands of local bankers), these new innovations merely follow the same flawed underwriting standards; they just deliver the results in a different manner or speed up the process.

And, as we can clearly see, the current methods of underwriting are truly flawed; not just from the current shoddy or non-existent bank lending but also from the very short-term, low impact government run programs like SBA guaranteed loans have on overall small business lending; which on the surface are great programs but are flawed as they too rely on the same underwriting abilities of banks and other financial lenders.

But, leave it to the entrepreneurial determination of many new entrants into the small business loan industry in seeking new ways not just to improve business loan underwriting but to disrupt the entire way that lending is conducted in this country.

For example, most traditional banks loans are considered fire and forget (or more like fire and hope).? When a loan is approved and funded, lenders set payment dates (usually at monthly intervals) then essentially take themselves out of the picture (even though they may still require the business to report its financial position periodically).

Then, should a borrower get into trouble, most lenders do not realize it until it is far too late for anything to be done (on both the bank?s and the borrower?s part) ? all of which adds risk.
